TREC is an international network of scientists, politicians and experts in the field of renewable forms of energy and their development. TREC proposes that electricity may be generated by solar thermal power plants and wind turbines in Nord-Africa and the Middle East and that the electrical power may be transmitted throughout those areas and to Europe via HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) transmission lines.

Modelling and Control of Voltage Source Converter based High Voltage Direct Current (VSC HVDC) Systems HVDC based on thyristor technology (¿Classic¿ HVDC) has over the last 40 years become an established method of transmitting power over long distances, and for connecting electrical power systems that are unsynchronised or operate at different frequencies.
Recent developments in power electronics have made HVDC based on high power transistor technology feasible. This application known as VSC HVDC. VSC HVDC potentially offers many advantages over classic HVDC in demanding applications. There are a small number of installations currently running around the world , mostly on an experimental basis. This project is investigating high performance robust design of VSC HVDC controllers, focussing on using LMI techniques. The project is being supported by the power system manufacturers AREVA.
